What is NLP?
NLP was originated by John Grinder whose
background was in linguistics and Richard Bandler whose background was in mathematics,
computing and gestalt therapy. Their research and studies of individuals who excelled
in their fields of therapy lead them to identifying explicit models of human excellence.
They identified the verbal and behavioural patterns of therapists Fritz Perls the
creator of gestalt therapy, Virginia Satir an internationally renowned family therapist
and Dr Milton Erickson one of the most acknowledged and successful hypnotherapist/psychiatrists
of our times.
As a result of their research, Grinder and Bandler formalized their findings along
with their own innovations into models, tools and techniques. To symbolise the relationship
between the brain, language and the body, they named the collected works
"Neuro-Linguistic Programming".
NLP encompasses the three most influential
components involved in producing human experience, neurology, language and programming
otherwise known as patterning.
Neurology regulates how
our bodies function. We are in contact with the external world through our five
senses: sight, hearing, feelings, smell and taste. Our neurology takes these external
stimuli and represents them to us with a matching set of "internal representations."
These form our subjective experience.
Language
determines how we interface and communicate with others. Our internal world is made
up of the pictures, it’s the conversations, dialogues and arguments we have with
ourselves. It’s also our feelings and emotions, which we used to think we had no
influence or control of.
Programming (patterns)
determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Our experience are combinations
of our internal representations, these form repeating patterns or programmes (habits).
These patterns run over and over again unless they are interrupted or changed. Positive
examples are driving a car and brushing our teeth. Negative examples are phobias
such as a fear of spiders or water and nail biting. These examples are all done
automatically with no need to think about them.
NLP describes the three most influential
components involved in producing human experience. The dynamics between these components,
mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how they interplay affects our ‘body
and behaviour (programming).
The findings of Grinder and Bandler were also proven by Nobel Prize-winner, Professor
Gerald Edelman who has spent thirty years researching how the brain functions. His
findings also conclude that the ten billion or more brain and nerve cells we have,
arrange themselves into groups in order to form "maps" that respond to our experiences.
It therefore follows that if we have a map of how someone performs a task successfully
we can literally take that map and train an individual to mimic this exercise with
the same successful conclusion."
NLP is:
NLP is a multi-dimensional process that
involves the development of behavioural competence and flexibility
NLP involves strategic thinking and an understanding
of the mental and cognitive processes behind behaviour.
NLP provides tools and techniques for the
development of states of individual excellence
NLP establishes a system of empowering beliefs
and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is, and what
the process of change is all about.
NLP is about self-discovery, exploring identity
and purpose.
NLP is not only about competence and excellence,
it’s also about knowledge and vision.
NLP is founded on two main presuppositions:
The Map is Not the Territory.
As human beings we can only know our perception of reality. We experience and respond
to the world around us primarily through our sensory representational systems. It
is our unique maps of reality that determine how we behave and the meaning of that
behaviour. Generally it’s not reality that empowers or limits us but our own map
of reality.
Life and 'Mind' are Systemic Processes.
The processes that take place within us and between us and our environment are systemic.
Our bodies, our societies, and our universe form our ecology of complex systems.
These systems interact and mutually influence each other
All the NLP models, tools and techniques
are based on the combination of the two principles above.
In the belief system of NLP it is not possible
for human beings to know objective reality and therefore have the one correct map
of the world. The aim of NLP is to create
the richest map possible that respects the systemic nature and ecology of ourselves
and the world we live in. The most effective people are those who have a map that
allows them to see the greatest number of available choices and perspectives. NLP is a way of inspiring more perspectives
and choices. Excellence comes from having many choices and knowledge from having
multiple perspectives.
Through the years, NLP has developed some
very powerful tools and techniques for communication and change in a wide range
of professional areas including: personal growth, parenting, therapy, education,
sport, business management, sales, leadership, team building.
NLP APPLICATIONS
NLP In personal development, NLP
is solutions focused, concentrating on what you want and how you want to be. Identifying
and making available the resources you already have to assist you in making the
desired changes.
NLP is being used in sports psychology to
help access those states of mind and body needed to ensure the repetition of peak
performance.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is being used
in education as teachers are learning to adjust their language so that what they
say can be understood by more children as they understand how children sort and
store information visually, auditory or kinaesthetically.
Whilst NLP is a powerful tool for change
at the level of the individual, the potential benefits to business and organisations
can be outstanding. Health care professionals are making use of
NLP techniques for communicating with patients more emphatically and
positively. Therapists and councillors are using NLP
techniques to create change quickly and more easily. Businesses are using
NLP to improve sales performance, decision making, presentation skills,
motivation, stress management, team building and much more.
IN SUMMARY
The whole principle of NLP is if something
has been achieved by someone this excellence can be modelled and installed in others.
The many different NLP tools and techniques
give us flexibility and can be used to improve the quality of all our lives and
those around us.
Personally you can grow and have more control and choice over your life and the
way you choose to live it.
Education and Health Care can improve with better trained staff who can identify
and respond to individuals preferred learning and communication systems.
Business and commerce can excel to new levels with clearer goals, improved communication
and a more skilled work force.
Sports professionals can achieve excellence by modelling and copying those that
excel in their field.
